Acupuncture

What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is the ancient Chinese method of healing that involves the insertion of very fine needles at various acupuncture points found on the body. These acupuncture points are located along meridian pathways that are known to conduct qi, or life force energy, through the body and to its various internal organs. Depending on your condition and what you are seeking treatment for, your acupuncturist will select specific acupuncture points with the intention to manipulate the qi to bring it back into balance so that it will work in harmony with your body's natural healing process.

What is it like to get an acupuncture treatment?

Acupuncture treatment is a wonderful way to relax, unwind and allow your body to naturally balance and heal itself. Once your acupuncture needles are inserted you will relax for about 30 to 45 minutes, lying down in a dimly lit room with calm music playing. While you relax, the acupuncture needles do the gentle work of balancing and unwinding any stagnant areas of pain or discomfort you are holding in your body. Many patients look forward to their acupuncture treatment because they know they are going to get a wonderfully rejuvenating acupuncture "nap" and leave the office feeling better than when they walked in.

Does it hurt to get acupuncture?

Acupuncture is virtually painless. We use a very gentle needle technique that produces very little to no pain. Many patients report that they don't even feel many of their needles being inserted. Once all of your acupuncture needles are placed, you will generally not even be aware that there are needles in your body. You may notice some sensations while the needles are "working" - like a tingling feeling, a cooling or warming sensation or a general feeling of heaviness in your body -but nothing painful or uncomfortable. Most people find that acupuncture is very enjoyable, calming and relaxing and many fall asleep during their acupuncture treatment.

What can acupuncture treat?

Acupuncture and Chinese medicine has been proven to successfully treat a number of acute and chronic health conditions. The majority of people seek out acupuncture for pain relief. However, acupuncture is beneficial in treating many other health issues as well, including:

  • Infertility - Female & Male
  • Pregnancy
  • Postpartum Depression
  • Lactation Issues
  • Menstrual Issues
  • PMS
  • Menopausal Symptoms
  • Depression & Anxiety
  • Digestive Issues
  • Sleep problems
  • Allergies
  • Cancer treatment support and chemotherapy side effects

....and many more!

Is acupuncture safe?

Yes, acupuncture is very safe. We only use sterile, single use needles that are removed and disposed of immediately following each acupuncture treatment. We have also been certified in the national standard Clean Needle Technique and we comply with all state required protocols for the handling and disposing of sterile acupuncture needles.

How many treatments will
I need?

This depends on how acute or chronic your individual condition may be. You may experience a significant improvement after only one acupuncture treatment. However, acupuncture has a cumulative effect and usually requires more than one treatment to get long-term relief. We generally recommend starting with 4 to 6 treatments and coming in at least once per week. Once your particular complaint has resolved you may choose to come in for a once per month acupuncture "tune-up" to help balance the body, keep your stress in check, support your immune system and maintain proper health and well-being.
